What is liberation counseling?
Liberation counseling is a framework for therapy that looks at an individual person within the context of the systems they live in. It aims to empower them by addressing these systems and helping them confront and transform oppressive conditions. This framework also emphasizes the importance of preserving historical and cultural narratives. Finding roots in one's historical lineage, even when it involves suffering, is vital to understanding where people come from and what they have gone through.
Liberation counseling differs from traditional therapy, which often focuses on individual pathology, by recognizing the systemic nature of oppression. This framework focuses on building relationships and understanding how societal and political forces also impact an individual’s well-being. This helps people reflect on their systems to better understand the world and the contextual factors that influence it.
Personal liberation is part of the process of collective liberation. When those who are oppressed begin the process of liberation, it becomes possible for all to experience emancipation and healing.
“For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others.”
— Nelson Mandela
